My name is Luis, and I joined Capacities in December 2024 as a Backend Developer. As someone who likes to take notes about everything, I had been a power user of Notion ever since I started university. I had notes about all my university courses, recipes, projects, books I wanted to read, movies I wanted to watch… all the bits and pieces of information that I used to organize and plan my life. However I did have two big pain points: how long things took to setup and organize, and how slow Notion was on my phone. It got to the point that I would use the basic Notes app on my phone to quickly capture things, so that after a while I could structure it as I wanted in Notion - definitely not the best workflow.

I heard about Capacities for the first time while listening to the Waveform Podcast. After David Pierce mentioned how fast it is and how easily it links all your content based on Objects, I was super intrigued and downloaded it immediately. Once I had my initial Object Types configured I found myself capturing many more notes and not spending so much time on structuring them - Capacities took care of that for me. Of course once you start falling in love with a tool you want to explore the different ways people are making use of it, and how the people behind that tool are thinking about it. So I joined the Capacities’ Discord channel, read some of their blog posts and watched all of Beth’s and Michael’s tutorials. That’s when I stumbled upon their Careers page and saw that they were looking for a new developer.

At the time I was actively looking for a new job since I wasn’t feeling very optimistic about the company I was working at, so I decided to give it a try and wrote to team@capacities.io. I was interviewing with multiple companies, but after meeting Michael and Steffen my priorities shifted very quickly. They were very clear on their principles, how they wanted Capacities to grow and how I could be a part of that - I was leaving every interview feeling more and more excited about joining the team. The way they think about their team just matched 1:1 with everything I was hoping for in my next job:

  1. Flat hierarchy with direct, open and transparent communication.
  2. Focus is primarily set on the product and its users, not on the corporation or its revenue.
  3. Calls and meetings don’t define or structure your day, your work does.
  4. There are no impositions on how, where and when team members work.
  5. Work and ideas are greatly valued over job titles, previous experiences or diplomas.
  6. Learning, researching and testing things is part of your job.

When the offer arrived it was a no-brainer.

I’m writing this almost three weeks after I joined and I couldn’t be more happy. You can tell how passionate, committed and hard-working the team is. Everyone is super kind and incredibly eager to help each other. I’ve already made some tiny contributions to Capacities, but I can’t wait for what’s coming next.

Exciting things ahead! 🚀
