What's next?
A preview of what to expect in the next months.
Published: April 23rd, 2026
We're on fire at the moment! 🚀 We restructured our internal processes and are now faster and more efficient than ever. We're shipping new features and improvements nearly every week now. You can see all the changes in our What's new section.
You can expect a lot to come over the next months. Nevertheless, we have to balance our vision for the app, the valuable feedback we receive from you, and the technical requirements needed to do this effectively. Here’s what we have planned for the short- to medium-term.
AI Assistant 2.0
AI is a real game changer for knowledge work, there’s no question, and we see immense potential for AI in Capacities. For us, AI does not mean automating knowledge work. It’s technology that can be helpful and assistive if done the right way. We 100% focus on that.
We envision the AI chat as a powerful assistant for your knowledge work. A place to research ideas, discuss your notes, derive conclusions, or create an object type from acquired knowledge.
The AI chat got a massive overhaul over the last few updates and is super helpful already. Nevertheless, we're not done yet:
- Select your model provider: Instead of only offering OpenAI as a model provider for the Capacities AI, you'll be able to select from other providers and also models hosted in Europe.
- Agentic Chat: Instead of just answering your question, the chat will analyze your question or endeavor, search for relevant notes or articles on the internet, remember your preferences or context, provide editing suggestions, or suggest creating objects, and will then provide you with a grounded answer based on all the context it has.
- Understanding media and chatting with media: With every update to our media types, the AI chat will be equipped to understand and use media in Capacities. We will add media content like text in images, audio and video transcripts, etc. to the context of the AI assistant. This will allow you to ask questions about the media and to use it in your workflows.
Tasks 2.0
Contextualized Task Management is a core part of Capacities. We received a lot of feedback and ideas for improving tasks. We'll work on these suggestions. This includes:
- Recurring tasks: Allow tasks to be recurring so they pop-up in your views on a repeated schedule. You can vote here.
- Deadline or Due Date: Add an additional date for a deadline. You can vote here.
We'll also consider other suggestions, but we do not have a concrete plan or strategy for them yet.
Media types 2.0
Working with media is an essential part of knowledge work. We see huge potential to bring working with media in Capacities to the next level. These improvements will be split into several releases, released sequentially. We'll overhaul every media type to make them more powerful and easier to work with.
A glimpse of what's to come:
- Weblinks:
- Automatic categorization of weblinks by type (”app”, “product”, “article”, “portfolio”, etc.) and topic (”tech”, “news”, “science”, “lifestyle”, etc.)
- Weblinks as chat context
- Summary and Reader Mode
- Audio:
- Full Audio transcription.
- Audio recording within Capacities on desktop and mobile apps. Frictionless audio recordings in the daily note and other convenient places.
- Summaries of voice memos.
- Audio as chat context.
- Categorization of audio files (e.g. “voice memo”, “meeting”, “podcast”, etc.)
- PDF: PDF is the most challenging one because of the sheer size they can have. Some users might want to upload full text books with hundreds of pages and complex layouts and graphics. Once we have a solid foundation with the above media types, we’ll tackle PDF.
- Full OCR with full-text search support.
- Annotations within PDFs.
- PDF summaries.
- PDFs as chat context.
- Save/extract images and graphics from PDFs.
- More media types: We will also explore the possibilities of more built-in object types that can bring value to many users. Examples would be a dedicated email type, YouTube video, or social media post, to replace the current legacy “Tweet” type.
API 2.0 and more powerful AI Chat Connectors
Connecting your workflows is an integral part of personal infrastructure. We want to enable more integrated and flexible workflows. To enable this, we'll work on two areas:
- API 2.0: More routes to read, change, and create content in Capacities programmatically. An extensive API allows developers to create tools and connectors to other apps everyone benefits from.
- Extending AI Chat Connectors: Based on the API 2.0, we'll extend the AI Chat Connectors to allow more powerful and flexible workflows.
UI/UX refactoring sprint
We want the experience to feel clear, friendly, and consistent in every part of the app to support flows that are easy to follow, without unnecessary clutter.
A UI/UX sprint will work across the product, with three main threads:
- Navigation and information architecture: Rethinking top-level structure and how you find your way around. This will be experimental: we are open to big UI changes as we get this right, including a smoother path for new users.
- Mobile: A reworked take on the mobile app so the experience is comparable in quality and depth to the desktop one.
- Built-in object types: Tighter, clearer support for the default object types, so they feel more distinct from the custom types you create yourself.
Our roadmap is big, and not everything will be added in the next two months, but we laid the foundations for an ambitious roadmap over the last year and are super excited to deliver an app that is more and more integrated, simply works the way you’d expect without a lot of customization, setup, and constant organizational overhead – a full focus on your work and creativity.
There are fundamental shifts in how we work at the moment, but we’re fully convinced: The future of knowledge work is bright. We’re excited about it, and we hope you are as well.
