Why Luca decided to work at Capacities
Since I started working as an engineer for Capacities in February 2024, I’ve worked on quite a few projects. But there’s one thing I never got around to: writing this blog post. Now, with the new year just around the corner, it feels like the perfect time to finally do my chores.
However, my journey with Capacities didn’t begin in February 2024 - nor did it start directly with Capacities. It began exactly one year earlier.
During my final year in high school, I was determined to do an internship at a tech startup. I’d been interested in technology and programming from a young age and was already working on my own projects in my free time. Now, I wanted to see how things worked in a professional setting.
After some research, I came across Saysom, a startup based in Stuttgart, that was developing an application for virtual spatial networking. During a phone call with one of the co-founders, Cornelius Carl, it became clear that Saysom wasn’t looking for interns at the time. However, this conversation opened up a new opportunity - Cornelius introduced me to another small startup that was still in its early stages but showed interest. That’s how I ended up writing an email to Steffen and Michael.
In July 2023, just before the summer holidays, I started my internship at Capacities. My project at the time was developing a browser extension - a project I revisited nearly a year later, leading to release v38. During this period, I learned so much across various areas - from research, conceptualization, and design to programming. But it wasn’t just me who was happy, Michael and Steffen were too. Although my internship ended as my final school year began, we promised to stay in touch with each other.
After successfully passing my final exams, I started studying at the University of Stuttgart. To earn some money, I reached out to Steffen and Michael again and started working as a working student for Capacities. I was thrown straight into the deep end, helping Michael with the development of the brand-new tables. This experience taught me not only how to tackle technical challenges but also how to find creative solutions. Over time, I took on more responsibilities, developed my own ideas, and eventually took full ownership of the project.
After five exciting months, I made the decision to drop out of university and join Capacities full-time. Since July 2024, I’ve worked on many more projects, such as improving workflows with media, redesigning the object sidebar, and creating new Linux and Windows (Arm) builds. And the best part: there’s so much more to come!
It’s incredible to think about all the coincidences that brought me here. I’m grateful to wake up every morning with the opportunity to learn something new. At Capacities, I’m not just working on a small personal project but rather contributing alongside an amazing team to create a place where people can think, organize their thoughts, and bring them to life - or, in my case, finally write a long-overdue blog post. I’m excited to continue this journey and see where the next year takes me!
